The Individualist Culture
It’s been said that experiences shape imaginations, and imaginations shape belief system which in turn shapes culture.
So we have had predominant experiences that have shaped our culture, most especially in third world Africa.
These experiences have formed a culture called the individualist culture. Some psychologist may have come across this term, in their study, and would comprehend better and more intimately.
However I’ll make this concept as simple and short as possible for everyone to understand its boundaries and I’ll be using my country as a case study.
Let’s begin!
The individualist culture is the idea that most Nigerians have adopted “las las we go blow” anf globally it's been seen as simplistic motivational ideaologies that amplify self (out of context)
This idea has been amplified and strengthened by the some quotes, seeming wise sayings and unguarded propositions.
While this idea has its advantages, they have gone beyond it boundaries of relevance and is responsible mediocre and disoriented society we see in third world Africa and more specifically Nigeria!
Majority want to be successful at the “expense” of his territory, environment so we can feel rich, receive some accolades and be successful. But any fool can be successful at being a fool; any thief can also be successful.
Success is not necessarily a product of wisdom!
And I know that when I say this, some people are quick to identify other people who they would define as, possessing this character, but that’s not essence of this post.
The essence of the post is self examination; don’t be quick to point fingers!
Look inward bro!
You know that saying? “As a man thinks in his heart, so he is”
I also believe that
“as an entire demographic make thier predominant belief system, they are ”.
That means our environment is a product and a reflection of our cooperate thinking.
So, we must graduate from a realm of the individualist culture, to the collectivist culture of looking out for our environment, and certainly the people around us while building our businesses, organization and lifestyle.
This certainly would begin to birth virtues in the mind of the people, virtues like sacrifice, the dignity of labour and honour., Team work, Love, innovation etc.
The technological and humanitarian and advanced lifestyles you see in nations who are “worthy references” have/Had this as a part of their culture.
The collectivist culture is summarised in one instruction “love your neighbour”
Let’s develop this mindset while building our lifestyles
Let’s develop this while building our businesses
Let’s develop this while building our organizations and families.
Most importantly let’s develop this culture while building our nation
And it’s only a matter of time, third world Africa and Nigeria will transcend the limits of its present predicament!
Signed.
